Code of Ethics

NAR Code of Ethics Training

NAR’s Code of Ethics requirement is separate from the state’s Canon of Ethics CE requirement and the USPAP for license renewal. While some instructors may offer courses that satisfy both, it’s important to confirm that your training meets NAR’s specific requirement to remain in good standing.

You must complete this training every three years.

If you have questions about your training status or upcoming course options, don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re here to help you stay on track and in compliance.

Please see the FAQ’s below to learn more about the Code of Ethics and why we have it.

You will need your NAR member number to check your status on the NAR website.

If you do not know your number, please call our office.

FAQs

The REALTOR® Code of Ethics is a foundational document adopted by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) that outlines the professional standards of conduct expected of REALTORS®. First adopted in 1913, the Code goes beyond legal requirements, holding REALTORS® to a higher level of integrity, professionalism, and service.

The real estate industry deals with the public’s largest financial investments. The Code of Ethics exists to ensure that:

  • REALTORS® act honestly and fairly with clients, customers, the public, and each other.

  • Ethical dilemmas and disputes can be handled consistently and constructively.

  • Consumers can trust that when they work with a REALTOR®, they’re working with someone who is committed to the highest standards.

It’s a requirement of membership.

  • All REALTORS® agree to abide by the Code when they join NAR.

It builds consumer confidence.

  • Clients know that if something goes wrong, they have recourse through local enforcement of the Code.

It supports professionalism.

  • It creates a shared framework for ethical business practices and respectful cooperation between agents.

It’s enforceable.

  • Ohio Association of REALTORS® review and adjudicate alleged violations, reinforcing accountability and credibility within the profession.

Since 2001, the National Association of REALTORS® (“NAR”) has required all REALTORS® to
take a Code of Ethics training class, at least once during each given cycle, in order to retain their
membership.

The Code’s purpose is not only to protect the public, but also to:

  • Guide REALTORS® in making sound, ethical decisions.

  • Foster cooperation and respect among fellow practitioners.

  • Uphold the dignity and reputation of the profession.

  • Encourage honesty, transparency, and fairness in every real estate transaction.
