Getting Started Tips

Learn your office policies. This helps you to set expectations based on what your brokers policies are. Also learn your brokers Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This is critical to operations.

Make a plan! A business plan, a marketing plan, a budget plan…You need to set goals and action items to begin your career in real estate. You want to get the word out about your new career, have a plan to manage your money and where you hope to be in the future!

Educate yourself – You are required to take 30 hours of Continuing Education every three years, but there is no reason you can’t take additional education! Making time for courses, research and learning can really help you especially early in your career.

Attend your orientation and other mandatory courses. The association has mandatory courses you must complete in the first year of membership. These courses and orientations are designed to get you started and armed with information so you can successfully begin your career as a real estate professional.

Develop your buyer/seller materials. This should be part of your marketing. Having branded items, and professional presentation packets can set you apart from other agents.

Find a mentor – Ask your broker if they have anyone they could recommend that you could ask for help and mentorship early in your career.

Get Organized! Start early and build habits that keep your organized and that will set you up for success. Keep your education certificates, any receipts for business expenses, scheduling appointments and more. The more organized you are, the better off you will be!

Create a safety plan! NAR has incredible REALTOR safety information. You are responsible for property, the security of your clients property, and of course your own personal safety! Make sure you have a plan in case of emergency or should a situation arise. Preparation is key!
